Nudgee Cemetery is owned and operated by the Corporation of the Trustees of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane. A common misunderstanding is that you must be a Catholic to be buried at Nudgee Cemetery.
This has never been the case, although up until 1957, permission was required from the Bishop for non-Catholics to be buried in the Cemetery. Anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs, is able to be buried at Nudgee Cemetery.
Conveniently located in the inner northern suburbs of Brisbane about 20 minutes from the City, Nudgee Cemetery is easily accessed either from the Gateway Arterial Road or Sandgate, Toombul and St Vincents Roads.
The Cemetery Office is located at 493 St Vincents Road Nudgee.
The land where Nudgee Cemetery is situated was purchased in 1863 with the first recorded burial on 8 June 1867. There is some unconfirmed evidence of the burial of a baby in 1865. Even with this long service to the community of Brisbane, Nudgee Cemetery remains open, is well maintained with religious and historic significance.
The focus at Nudgee Cemetery is on providing a positive visitation experience for families and friends. Visiting a loved one in a cemetery can be a difficult time, and a positive experience will enable people to feel a little better for having spent some time at the grave. For some people, visiting the gravesite is an integral part of the grieving process. Our goal is that when people come to visit their loved ones they do so in a serene and well-cared-for environment.
At the time of the funeral, we pride ourselves in the preparation of the gravesite. Wherever possible the soil is removed from the site until the funeral has concluded. Every care is taken to provide a safe environment for funeral directors, mourners and other visitors to the Cemetery. The funeral director will provide information on procedures to ensure everyone's safety at the open grave. Again, in extreme weather conditions pedestrian traffic will be limited for safety reasons. Workplace Health and Safety and the safety of all visitors and contractors is paramount at Nudgee Cemetery.
The Cemetery is open for visitation during daylight hours all year round.
Floral Tributes, whether natural or artificial, may be removed and disposed at the discretion of the Cemetery.
